A Marriage Certificate is a legal document evidencing marriage that has taken place between a bride and a groom. A marriage certificate can prove to be useful while applying for many other government documents after marriage like Aadhaar Card, Passport, and Visa. Documents Required in Delhi:
  • The groom must be 21 years of age

  • The bride must be 18 years of age

  • Affidavits

  • Two witnesses (Three in case of marriage through the Special Marriage Act)

  • Identity proof – Bride and Groom

  • Date of Birth Proof – Bride and Groom

  • Address Proof Before Marriage – Bride and Groom

  • Address Proof After Marriage – Bride and Groom

  • Permanent Resident Proof of Witness

How to Apply in Delhi:
  • Go to https://edistrict.delhigovt.nic.in/.

  • Online click ‘Make Appointment with SDM and registrar of marriage.

  • Select your District and continue

  • Fill in the husband’s details and select ‘Registration of Marriage Certificate’.

  • Fill in the Marriage Certificate form and select the date of appointment.

  • Click on ‘Submit Application’

  • You would then obtain an acknowledgement page with the details of your appointment and instructions

  • There will be a link to a fully filled form on that web page.

  • Take a printout of the Acknowledgement

Offline Apply for Delhi Marriage Registration:
  • You have to visit the nearby sub-registrar office.

  • From where you will get the Marriage certificate form.

  • That Form you have to fill carefully and correctly.

  • If the bride’s name or surname changed after marriage, then you have to mention that new name.

  • In the case of the Hindu Marriage Act, you need two witnesses and in the Special Marriage Act, you need three witnesses. Witnesses can be your relatives or your friends.

  • Then all the witnesses need to sign the documents and fill in their information as well.

  • A spouse’s signature also needed in all the documents.

  • A wedding photograph is also needed to submit with an invitation card.

  • The address evidence of both husband and wife are also required to submit to the Sub Registrar Office.

  • Check carefully all the details before submitting the form and the documents and submit them to the Registrar’s office.

  • Keep one copy of the application form with yourself.

Marriage under the Hindu Marriage Act

In case of an application for a marriage certificate under the Hindu Marriage Act, verification of all the documents related to both the parties is carried out on the date of application and a certain day is fixed for registration. On the day, of registration, both parties together with witnesses who attended their marriage, should be present to complete the formalities.

Marriage under the Special Marriage Act

Both parties Groom & Bride need to be present after submission of documents for the issuance of a public notice, thereby inviting objections. Also, one copy of the wedding notice would be displayed on the notice board of the office, and a copy of the notice would be sent by registered post to both parties, i.e. the Groom & Bride, to the address given by them.

In case of no objections, registration is conducted 30 working days after the notice date. Both parties and three witnesses are required to be present on the registration date.

Marriage Registration Witness Requirement

Marriage certificate applicants are required to take a witness along with them. A Witness can be anyone who is the holder of an Aadhaar card or PAN card or other acceptable proof as per the list of documents above. The witness should preferably not be an immediate blood relative and should have attended the marriage.
